Employment Services

The Employment Development Unit helps immigrants and refugees to find appropriate and sustainable employment. Employers are our partners in helping new Canadians find work and make Saskatoon their home. For more information please read the Statement of Purpose.


The goals of the Employment Development staff are to:

  • enhance employer access to the value training, skills and experience of newcomers
  • increase newcomers' awareness of Canadian workplace expectations
  • enhance newcomers' ability to participate fully in the job market

  

Saskatoon Open Door Society also runs the Enhanced Language Training Program, which assists immigrant professionals trained abroad to gain employment in their field in Canada. The program offers a 15-week classroom phase, a work placement of between two and six months and a mentoring experience. Lee Reaney, Life Work Advisor, is the contact for this program.


Services for Employers

By hiring a newcomer, employers can enhance the diversity, skills and success of their organizations by tapping into the training and experience newcomers are able to contribute to the Saskatoon labour force. We offer:

  • recruitment assistance
  • post-hiring support
  • on-site translation
  • assistance in language skills training for New Canadian employees
  • workplace cross-cultural awareness education
  • assistance with credential recognition for foreign-trained workers

 


Services for Job Seekers

Work with an Employment Counsellor to:

  • establish career goals and develop an action plan
  • assess and recognize prior skills, education and qualifications
  • develop a resume, cover letter and prepare for interviews
  • contact employers
  • find job leads and access job postings
  • upgrade skills
  • identify barriers to employment
  • obtain job coaching
  • access workplace ESL, ESL Literacy and other ESL training
  • develop basic computer skills
  • obtain work experience placement
  • and much more

ELT/IIP (Enhanced Language Training/Immigrant Internship Project)

 

This program is a new initiative of the provincial government designed to help foreign trained and skilled immigrants prepare for work in the Canadian workplace.  Its focus is to build work-related language skills, gain access to career mentorship support, and provide a relevant and valid Canadian work experience for newcomers who are experiencing difficulty accessing employment in their chosen field.
