Volunteers are matched with a newcomer(s) to Canada for community and cultural orientation, friendship, support and conversation practice | |
| Training | General orientation to Saskatoon Open Door Society and immigration issues; specific orientation to HOST program; on-going training events through the year. | |
| Volunteer Requirements | 1. Two reference checks 2. Criminal Record Check 3. Must attend volunteer orientation |

| Time Involved & Commitment | About two hours per week for six to 12 months. | |
| Hours of Work | flexible; arranged between volunteer and match | |
| Duties | 1. Visit once a week with newcomer in his or her home 2. Introduce newcomer to community (sightseeing, attending events) 3. Help familiarize newcomer with day-to-day activities (taking the bus, grocery shopping, talking on telephone) 4. Provide friendship 5. Provide support by discussing concerns of newcomer and making appropriate referrals to Saskatoon Open Door or other agencies 6. Provide information about Saskatoon and Canadian culture 7. Assist in English language learning (non-formal or formal) 8. Maintain contact with HOST coordinator during match |
