On March 27, 2013 we held our first Women's Forum and it was hugely successful! Over 80 past and present Women's program participants came together to identify and discuss ideas to improve our Women's programs. Not only did we receive great ideas, we had a wonderful time bringing together all these participants who visited old friends and met new ones.
The Immigrant Women's Forum celebrates cultural diversity and at the same time gives an opportunity for immigrant women to exchange information, knowledge, experiences and ideas. Participants also showcased their beautiful and elaborate fashions from various countries such as Bosnia, China, Congo, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Iran, Iraq, Philippine, Russian, Sudan, and Canada, just to name a few. Keynote speaker, Dr. Judy White, professor and advocate for immigrant and refugee women was present along with Maria Zalesak, Sheila Murray and April Sora, who led discussion groups on topics such as education, health and community services. Some of the highlights of this event for most of the participants, based on their feedback were, the relationships they built, the shared stories with each other, the information of the available community services, and of course the fashion Show.
We would like to thank everyone who attended and also special thanks to the City of Saskatoon, Community Outreach Unit who assisted in organizing the forum. Thank you! We look forward to next year's Forum.
